Lend Your Time and Talent to MND and Make a Difference in Someone's Life
Maryland New Directions relies on the time and talent of countless volunteers to support the needs of our motivated job seekers and we are always seeking help from professionals who want to give back to their community. If you would like to make a difference and help change lives, there are many ways to volunteer, either individually or as a group. Please look at the available opportunities below, then click here to connect with Karlise “Kae” Brown for more information.
Individual Volunteer Opportunities
Interviews are often the most nerve-wracking part of the job search process. To help our clients practice their “self-marketing” skills, we host a Mock Interview event one Thursday per month from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. We are always looking for volunteers with professional experience to conduct practice interviews with our clients and offer their perspectives and feedback. Your participation is extremely valuable for our clients who are looking for work and are eager to ace their next interview.
Open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, our NOW computer lab is a valuable resource for clients who are looking to hone their basic computer skills, refine their resumes, and conduct online job searches. We rely on volunteers to support our clients with resume development, navigating online job listings, and applying for open positions. Our ideal volunteer candidates will have professional experience and excellent computer skills.
To ensure our clients are ‘dressed for success,’ we have a professional clothing boutique that offers free interview and work-appropriate clothing to those we serve. Volunteers in our clothing boutique help sort, tag, and hang clothing to organize and increase efficiency in the space, and put together outfits and accessories for our clients to help them feel confident walking into their interview or new career.
As part of their training experience, our clients prepare group presentations. We rely on volunteers to sit in on and evaluate these presentations and offer our clients constructive feedback on their work. This exercise is essential in helping our clients build confidence and hone their presentation skills as they search for employment. Presentations are typically conducted from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. several days each month.
We also offer opportunities for volunteers to support our front desk and overall administrative needs while being a positive ambassador of MND’s services and programs.
If you have a creative mind and are interested in becoming an integral part of the overall success and stability of MND, our advisory committees may be your niche! Members support the planning and implementation of fundraising events and strategies, help grow the visibility of the organization, identify new and expand current relationships with various stakeholders, and more!

Group Volunteer Opportunities
Maryland New Directions welcomes volunteer groups of 5-15 people to support our clients as they prepare to launch their new careers. We love working with corporate partners and businesses who are committed to philanthropy and social responsibility and desire to make a meaningful contribution to their community. We are seeking volunteers with professional experience, who are familiar with resume building, conducting job interviews, and other soft skills to offer our clients valuable perspective and feedback.
Volunteer groups are required to attend a 30-minute orientation, which can take place the same day as your volunteer session. MND provides the necessary supplies and instructions for all volunteers.
Below is an overview of our group volunteer opportunities. Each allows your group to work directly with our clients and make an impact on their journeys as they seek to change their lives through employment. We often host one-hour workshops in our computer lab to support our clients in developing their resumes. Volunteers will work with our clients to assist with basic computer skills and offer feedback to make sure their applications are ready to be submitted to potential employers.
For groups who are unable to join us in person, we also welcome volunteers to review and edit client resumes virtually. Volunteers are given 8 days to complete this project.
